Every chatbot answer feels weightless, a few words materializing on glass. The illusion ends at the substation. Behind the effortless interface stands the largest industrial buildout in modern American history, and it is drawing down three things your household depends on, electricity, water, and grid stability, faster than anyone in charge is willing to say out loud.
Start with the numbers. More than 4,500 data centers already operate in the United States, consuming roughly 176 terawatt-hours annually, about 4.4 percent of all American electricity, with over 700 more facilities under construction, according to industry data compiled by Electric Choice.
Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory projects data centers could reach as much as 12 percent of national electricity consumption by 2028. The federal Energy Information Administration says this demand is pushing total U.S. power use to record highs. In Loudoun County, Virginia, the epicenter of the boom, data centers already consume more power than every home in the county combined.
You are paying for it. Americans saw roughly 60 billion dollars in rate increases in 2025 alone, with average electricity prices up nearly 10 percent in a year. Consumer Reports profiled a Virginia man whose monthly bill jumped from around 100 dollars to 281, and his region is the preview, not the exception.
Water tells the same story. Cooling these facilities consumed some 17 billion gallons in 2023, and researchers at UC Riverside estimate the industry could require between 700 million and 1.5 billion gallons per day of new capacity by 2030, with the burden falling hardest on the small towns that host the buildings.
Count the Cost Before You Build the Tower

The Lord’s question assumes a builder would be ashamed to be caught halfway up a tower he could not finish. Our builders feel no such shame. Projections show demand from data centers nearly doubling between 2025 and 2028, from about 80 gigawatts toward 150, while the generation and transmission to supply it exists mostly on paper.
Permitting a power plant takes years. Building transmission takes longer. Training a model takes months. That mismatch is the whole story, and it means the strain lands on the grid you already have, the one that was aging and brittle before the AI boom found it.
To be fair, the industry is not blind to this. Companies are signing nuclear deals, deploying liquid cooling that slashes direct water use, and funding new generation. All good, and all years away. The gap between now and then is the part that should concern every household, because a grid running at the edge of capacity has no margin left for the ice storm, the heat dome, or the summer peak that used to be absorbed quietly.
What the Prudent Household Does With This Information
None of this requires panic. It requires the same posture Scripture commends and preppers practice, sober assessment and preparation while options are cheap.
- Expect electricity to keep getting more expensive and budget accordingly.
- Take grid reliability seriously as a planning input, not a paranoid fantasy; backup power, from a generator to a battery bank to a well-stocked ability to function through an outage, has moved from luxury to prudence.
- If a hyperscale facility is proposed in your county, show up to the hearings and ask who pays for the infrastructure and whose wells draw down.
The AI economy has decided your grid is its raw material. The least you can do is count the cost, since the men building the towers declined to.
