Khaled Mashaal

Hamas Leader Boasts of Winning Over America’s Young People

  • What Is Driving Silver’s Price Rise and Will It Continue?

Khaled Mashaal, the Hamas leader based abroad, recently sat down for an interview with Al Jazeera and made a startling claim about influence in the United States.

He declared that “fifty-one percent of American youth are supportive not only of the Palestinian cause, but of Hamas.”

Mashaal offered no source for this figure, and reports from outlets like MEMRI and The Times of Israel note that he provided no backing for it. He tied the supposed shift to the events following October 7, 2023, saying the conflict had changed perceptions worldwide.

Sentiment from the left, which remains the dominant political philosophy among young Americans despite progress made during President Donald Trump’s campaign and presidency, makes it realistic to believe Mashaal’s claims. The globalist- and leftist-driven push to promote anti-Zionism has affected both the left and right, particularly for impressionable youth.

“Can you imagine that the Palestinian case entered into the minds of young Americans and Europeans? This is a new division of resistance. In the street, the youth, university campuses, political parties, and countries throughout Europe, Latin America, Africa, Asia — there has been a great gain for the Palestinian cause,” Mashaal said.

This comes at a time when campus activism over Gaza has faced heavy pushback. Universities across the country imposed strict disciplines on protesters, including suspensions and expulsions, while the Trump administration took steps to curb what it called antisemitism on campuses, including funding cuts and deportations of some international students involved.

The shift has not been universal. The most progressive colleges and universities in America continue to push back on restrictions while shielding pro-Hamas protesters.

Older polls from 2023 and early 2024 showed sharp divides among younger Americans, with some surveys finding significant sympathy for Palestinians or even controversial views on the conflict’s resolution. Disillusionment with Israel and acceptance of Palestine have become more prevalent as the worldwide anti-Zionist movement has taken hold in America.

Mashaal also addressed ceasefire talks, insisting Hamas would not surrender its arms. Giving up weapons would be like “removing the soul” of the group, he argued. Instead, he floated ideas like hiding them or a long-term truce to allow Hamas to regroup without constant attacks from Israel.

“We want to have a vision in which we have guarantees that these weapons are hidden, kept, not used, and not paraded. And we offered a long truce of seven or 10 years.”

He rejected any international force inside Gaza, viewing it as occupation, and closed with a prediction that history and divine will would lead to Israel’s defeat.

Israeli officials have made clear there is no room for an armed Hamas in any future Gaza arrangement, with plans for demilitarization moving forward.

Claims like Mashaal’s raise questions about propaganda efforts aimed at Western audiences, especially when unverified numbers paint a picture that doesn’t fully match available polling trends. The real battle for hearts and minds continues, but facts on the ground—and in surveys—tell a story of resilience against terrorist narratives.
