Isaiah 5:20

Woe Unto Them That Call Evil Good, and Good Evil

  • Is It Too Late to Buy Gold and Silver?

The warning did not come from a modern pundit or political commentator. It came from Scripture.

“Woe unto them that call evil good, and good evil; that put darkness for light, and light for darkness.” The words recorded in the Book of Isaiah were not written for a specific election cycle or news event, yet they read today like a diagnosis of the age we are living in.

What Isaiah described was not merely personal sin or moral confusion. It was a societal condition. A moment when the moral compass of a people is deliberately inverted, when truth itself is redefined, and when the language used to describe reality is corrupted at its core.

That inversion is no longer theoretical.

In modern America, law is increasingly described as violence. Order is framed as oppression. Biblical conviction is portrayed as harm. Meanwhile, chaos is excused as compassion, defiance is celebrated as courage, and rebellion is dressed up as justice. This is not accidental drift. It is a pattern.

Scripture teaches that words matter because words shape understanding. God spoke the world into existence with words. Christ is called the Word made flesh. When language is distorted, reality soon follows. That is why moral inversion is always an early sign of spiritual decay.

We see it clearly in how authority is treated. Law enforcement carrying out lawful duties is accused of brutality. Courts applying the Constitution are said to threaten democracy. Churches holding to biblical teaching are labeled dangerous or extreme. Parents defending their children are framed as threats. In each case, what is lawful and ordered is cast as evil, while what is disruptive and unlawful is excused or praised.

This is exactly the inversion Isaiah warned about. It is not a coincidence that they’re bringing the fight directly into churches.

Evil is not merely tolerated. It is reframed as good. And good is no longer debated. It is condemned.

This reversal serves a purpose. When good is labeled evil, people of conscience are pressured into silence. When evil is called good, resistance feels immoral. The goal is not persuasion but compliance. Confusion becomes a tool, and fear becomes leverage.

The Bible consistently links lawlessness with deception. Disorder is never presented as neutral. It is always a gateway. When a society rejects truth, it does not become free. It becomes vulnerable. Scripture warns that chaos does not liberate people; it enslaves them.

This is why Christians must pay attention, not with panic or rage, but with discernment.

Discernment begins by recognizing that moral language is being manipulated. It requires asking whether words align with truth or are being used to obscure it. It means refusing to accept emotional framing that contradicts both Scripture and reality. It means understanding that compassion divorced from truth is not love, but deception.

The Bible does not teach the destruction of order in the name of mercy. It does not celebrate lawlessness as virtue. It does not call evil good, no matter how emotionally compelling the argument may sound.

Isaiah’s warning was not meant to produce fear. It was meant to produce clarity.

“Woe” in Scripture is not just condemnation. It is an alarm. A call to recognize danger before it is too late. A reminder that when a culture celebrates inversion, judgment is not far behind, not because God is cruel, but because truth has been rejected.

The answer is not retreat. It is faithfulness.

Christians are called to stand calmly in truth, to speak plainly, and to refuse the corruption of language that makes lies feel righteous. When words are twisted, clarity becomes an act of obedience. When truth is unpopular, faithfulness becomes a witness.

Isaiah’s warning still stands because the human heart has not changed. Neither has God’s standard.

Those who call evil good and good evil may dominate headlines for a season, but truth does not need permission to endure. It only needs people willing to see clearly and speak honestly, even when the culture insists on calling darkness light.
